The phone rang, and John picked it up eagerly. He’d been waiting all day for his wife, Rachel, to call him back. He’d tried to call her a dozen times, but there was no answer. “Hey, honey,” he said when he heard her voice. “Where have you been?”
“Oh, just out running errands,” Rachel replied, her voice tight and strained. “Listen, I gotta go, okay?”
John felt a knot form in his stomach. Something wasn’t right. He decided to follow Rachel, just to make sure she was okay. He trailed her car to a small apartment complex on the other side of town. He watched as she went into one of the buildings. He waited for a few minutes, then followed her inside.
What he saw was like a punch in the gut. Rachel was in bed with their next-door neighbor, a guy named Steve. They were naked and sweaty, and Rachel had a huge grin on her face. John couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He turned and ran out of the apartment, tears streaming down his face.
